Sharon Tate and Jay Sebring's relatives denounce Manson's horrible murders 50 years later

It's been 50 years since members of the Manson family slaughtered seven people during the summer of 1969 – and the painful past continues to haunt their loved ones.

Supporters of hippie sectarian Charles Manson killed five of their victims on August 9, 1969: actress Sharon Tate, pregnant for 8 and a half months, Abigail Folger, heiress of the cafe, celebrity hairdresser Jay Sebring, the Polish director Voityck Frykowski and Steven Parent, a friend of the guardians of the property. The killings took place at Tate's home, while her husband, director Roman Polanski, was abroad.

The next night, a wealthy grocer and his wife, Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, were stabbed to death at home on the other side of town. Killers scribbled expressions such as "Pigs" and a "misspelled Healter Skelter" in the blood at the scene of the crime.

The anniversary of the murders sparked several films, including "The Haunting of Sharon Tate" with Hilary Duff; "Charlie Says" with Matt Smith – of the famous "Doctor Who" – like Manson; "Once upon a time in Hollywood" directed by Quentin Tarantino featuring Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio; and "Tate," starring Kate Bosworth as the star of the '60s, whose release date has not yet been set.

Sebring's niece, Mishele DiMaria, has a vivid memory of summer 2009, when she went to see her favorite band perform in Las Vegas. Her enthusiasm disappeared when she saw the singer appear on stage wearing a t-shirt with an image of Manson, as well as three of his followers.

"I felt like I'd been kicked in the stomach," DiMaria told People magazine on Wednesday. "Happiness has ripped me off. Knowing that I had unknowingly supported someone who supported my uncle Jay's killers made me physically sick. The scar was torn. "

Debra Tate has dedicated her life to keeping the memory of her older sister, fighting for the killers to stay behind bars. The 66-year-old woman told the release that she had tried to stay away from the scene, but strangers fascinated by the case were knocking on her door without warning.

Shortly before the fiftieth anniversary of death, a man headed to the door in Debra, southern California, to ask if she was related to Tate. The mysterious man said that he had a message from Manson. Debra said that she had immediately grabbed her shotgun and let the man know that she was armed. The stranger is gone – but the incident left her shaken.

"I have death threats on Facebook, people go through my door, have quirks on my personal website," Debra explained. "It's very alarming and I would be silly if I did not pay attention to that and treat it as credible."

Nevertheless, the meeting did not prevent Debra from attending every parole hearing to speak on behalf of loved ones who can not attend.

"GHOST HUNTERS" SHARE WHAT THEY WILL TRY FROM MANSON MURDER HOUSE

Sebring's nephew Anthony DiMaria is about to release a documentary about his uncle's life as a celebrity businessman and barber. He wants to make sure that his uncle has not been reminded of the way he died.

"If all the victims do not come out of their grave and live the 50 years they should have lived with us and all their friends who love them, there will be no closure," DiMaria said.

In 2018, Debra told Fox News that her relationship with Tate was magical, a relationship that has earned her a lifetime of memories that she cherishes today.

"Sharon was a special human being," explained Debra. "She was 10 years older than me, which meant that there was no sibling rivalry. She was so loving and nurturing. People actually thought that Sharon was my mother because she looked very mature at 16 and she was still running this 5 year old boy in her hand. I was like her personal American Girl doll at 10 years old.

"We continued to have a strong bond as I grew older. His friends were my friends. I socialized in his social circle … I have memories of walking in Melrose and playing to disguise ourselves … we made each other.

ANOTHER DIE DIES?

While Tate's career flourished in Hollywood, Debra had insisted she be there to give her well-deserved advice.

"I am very critical of myself," she said. "I've always been, when I was a child, my mother kept telling me:" Debra, you're your worst enemy. "I've always been very critical and hard on me. But Sharon always told me not to sweat the little things, she really loved and fed me, she told me that I was extremely bright and talented and that I could do all I could in the world. "

Over the years, Tate has been sought after by filmmakers and photographers for its disconcerting beauty. But Debra said that Tate was more interested in captivating the audience with his talent.

"She's not taken seriously at all," Debra said. "[But]… She took her job very seriously. She worked hard to develop the profession. She knew it was her personality, but she also knew it was not what she was. What was important for her was to maintain her heart, mind and all that characterized Sharon. She just wanted to be herself.

"And she had a sense of fantastic humor," she added. "And the most important thing in her life was being able to make people laugh and make fun of herself. We have done it often.

"She had an incredible work ethic," Debra continued. "Here is a woman who had the confidence to go after her dreams. I want to keep her alive … I want people to remember her for what she could have done if she had lived. "

Since Tate's death, Debra has also devoted much of his life to counseling victims of violent crime. She said some lessons can still be learned from Tate.

"Americans have the gift of not observing their story," she said. "History is secular. It comes back again. And currently in the world, especially here in the United States, we are seeing things come back. And they are not necessarily all good. So I try to be the voice of reason.

"In reality, the only thing that matters is love, not hate … we have too many homicides, shootings, hate crimes … All of this comes back again." The legacy of Sharon must be realized because she is an example of the worst that can come from things like this. "
