It's a strange story today as we all sit down to guess what Sony's next console will look like, what we all call PlayStation 5, although this has not been confirmed yet. We're looking at … something that seems to be PS5 material, but supposedly, we're looking at patents for not final product, but instead of the PS5 temporary development kit.
This story comes from the Dutch site LetsGoDigital, who downloaded a PDF showing a European patent for a device for Sony it certainly looks like a console. Then, after it was posted a few times, a developer republished a MetroUK link to the unit, saying that it was a development kit and that he had some in the office.
This became the very story that a developer had confirmed that the design was a development kit. But then he deleted that tweet because, well, you really are not allowed to say such things when you have something as secret as a PS5 development kit in your hands. But here it is:
Many notice the "V" engraved in the shape of the top, which made me think that maybe Sony will eventually call the new PSV system, instead of PS5, with a capital S and 5 seeming too similar in many languages. It may seem a bit confusing since PSVR exists, and we had PS Vita some time ago.
We also note that … it's horribly ugly. Yes, it's true. It's a monster, but it's also a development kit, and for the most part, these do not usually look like the console itself.
This is what the PS4 Developer Kit looked like.
This is what the PS3 development kit looked like.
Although sometimes the development kits can be at least pretty close:
This is what the PS2 development kit looked like.
This is what the Xbox One Developer Kit looked like.
This is what the Xbox 360 Developer Kit looks like.
So, either you have something that is 100% different from the final product, or something that is perhaps 90% identical, with strange growths.
Since the last two generations of PlayStation development kits that look nothing like the final productI guess no, what we see in these diagrams will not look much like the last box. Sony consoles can represent many things, but they are never downright ugly. I mean, most consoles nowadays go through so many layers of product design, and few of them are all terribly terrible. The ugliest consoles of the last 20 years have probably been the Xboxand maybe the first generation Xbox One, the two massive bricks. But with PS2, PS3 and the PS4, very stylish, I'm not too concerned about the final version of PS5 based solely on these images.
Sony should show what the PS5 really looks like (and what's its name) at an event planned for early next year, if the latest generation is an indication. We will know more then. But for now, keep an eye on other leaks. I asked Sony to comment on this design, and will update it if I hear the answer
