Nortion had opted for the novel in 1999, at the time of its publication, and had been trying to shoot the film since, only passing for the director and star in 2014. Although it took him nearly five years to do it, Motherless Brooklyn is one of the most anticipated films of the upcoming festival circuit. It will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and close the New York Film Festival in October.

Here is the synopsis of Jonathan Lethem's novel:

Lionel Essrog is the self-proclaimed Human Freakshow of Brooklyn, an orphan whose impulses urge him to bark, count and tear our tongue in a surprising and original way. With three veterans of St. Vincent's Home for Boys, he works for the limousine and detective service of Frank Minna, a small gangster. Life without Frank Minna, the charismatic king of Brooklyn, would be unimaginable, so it does not matter if the tasks he entrusts to him are not really legal. But when Frank is fatally stabbed, one of Lionel's colleagues lands in jail, the other two fight for his post and the widow of the victim leaves the city. The world of Lionel is suddenly upset, and this pariah who has trouble to converse even to try to unravel the threads of the cause while trying to keep the words in his head. Motherless Brooklyn is a brilliantly original tribute to the classic detective story of one of the most acclaimed writers of his generation.

Motherless Brooklyn is about to go out in theaters November 1, 2019.
