Investigators believe that the ex-wife of a prominent Atlanta surgeon and civic leader shot dead their two children before taking it to herself.

Dr. Christopher Edwards, chairman of the Atlanta Housing Authority's board of directors, learned of the death Wednesday night, said a family spokesman at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper. Their bodies were found inside the luxury townhouse of his ex-wife, Vinings, during a social checkup.

The victims were identified by Cobb County police as Christopher Edwards Jr., 24, and Erin Edwards, 20. Dr. Marsha Edwards, 58, was identified as the suspect of their death.

"Dr. Edwards, his extended family and his friends are in a state of heartbreak and shock, and respect for the family's privacy is paramount as arrangements are made, "spokesman Jeff Dickerson said in a statement.

The Cobb County police entered the house on Nobility Way around 6 pm Wednesday. The townhouses community, Vinings Park East, is about 1 mile from the Cumberland Mall. House prices in development averaged $ 500,000.

We do not know when the shooting took place.

"According to the investigators, the evidence on the scene indicated that two victims died from gunshot wounds," said police spokeswoman Constable Sydney Melton. "The suspect had also died from a self-inflicted bullet wound."

Dr. Christopher Edwards, an orthopedic surgeon, sits on the Board of Trustees of the Medical School at Morehouse College and has previously served on the Board of Trustees of Grady Memorial Hospital. His son was the social media manager for the Atlanta Film and Entertainment Office, according to his LinkedIn page.

Erin Edwards, a graduate of the Woodward Academy, was a student at Boston University. She had just completed a summer internship with a NBC channel in New York.

The police did not reveal any additional information about the alleged double murder-suicide, citing an ongoing investigation. Just two days before their deaths, photos on social media showed what seemed like a happy mother-daughter trip to Italy.

Anyone who is aware of the shooting is asked to contact the Cobb County Police Department's Crime Against the Person Unit at 770-499-3945.
