After months of rumorsVerizon eventually sold Tumblr for $ 3 million, a fraction of what Yahoo paid for the once-powerful blogging service in 2013.
The media conglomerate (which also owns TechCrunch) has clearly never been sure what to do with the property after it was swallowed up as part of its acquisition of Yahoo in 2016. Since then, all parties have managed to the conclusion that Tumblr was just not a good choice, whether under the banner Verizon or Yahoo, which represents a $ 1.1 billion error.
For Tumblr, however, the story can still end well. By all accounts, his new home at Automattic is much better suited. The service joins a portfolio that includes a popular blog service WordPress.com, the Akismet spam filtering service and the long form storytelling platform, Longreads.
In an interview this week, Automattic founder and CEO Matt Mullenweg presented the story of Tumblr and the impact of poorly received restrictions on adult content. He also clarified the direction Tumblr is taking, including increased potential for multimedia, such as podcasting.
