Do you think you've had long flights? Qantas plans to test the first ever 19-hour commercial flights between New York and Sydney and between London and Sydney and monitor the state of the human body's endurance, the Guardian reports. The crew and 40 test passengers will have a portable technology to measure sleep, food and drink consumption, and responses to in-flight entertainment and lighting of new Boeing 787s. 9. The longest flight in the world – New York to Singapore in 18 hours and 25 minutes – and another flight from Qantas, London to Perth in 17 hours. But it comes with a special menu to help hydration and a yoga studio in Perth to relax, according to the the Wall Street newspaper.
"If you can survive 16 hours, you can probably survive 19, 20," says a passenger who flew London to Perth. "I would probably like to challenge myself, I would certainly do it once." But long air travel can be difficult for the body, sometimes resulting in deep vein thrombosis or blood clots. Scientists from Monash University will therefore monitor the evolution of the flight crew's melatonin levels and measure brainwave data on electroencephalogram devices installed on the pilots, by CNN. If successful, the flights could trigger a new battle between Boeing and Airbus on long-range planes. There is also the question of the interest of the passengers. "It's ultimately a business decision, and the economic data must be assimilated," says a Qantas executive. The flights could be operational as early as 2022. (Read more stories about air travel.)
