Brittany runs a marathon – oOne of the big successes of this year's Sundance Film Festival, which received Amazon Studios' highest award for its distribution, is proving to be a real treat for the audience, as well as some star for Jillian Bell in the lead role.
Paul Downs Colaizzo makes his debut as a director with a story close to his heart. He is (vaguely) inspired by his friend and former roommate Brittany, who has decided to change the course of his life to fix it. She ended up doing it while training and running at the New York Marathon. Colaizzo runs with this principle and tells the story of a young woman whose life escapes from control and who finally understands the need to do something to fix it. His first response is to see a doctor and get a prescription for Adderall. While looking at her, the doc has another tip: to get her out of the party and adopt a healthier lifestyle. It finally wins and makes Britain start slowly to take a step, one block at a time, to change things.
Soon, encouraged by friends like Catherine (Michaela Watkins) and Seth (played with great wit by Micah Stock), she is making her way to the impossible: a run in the New York City marathon – something unthinkable in his case. This is the fundamental premise here when we get to know Brittany Forgler (not the family name of the actual inspiration) and various people in her life as she moves towards the moment that will change her life.
Colaizzo also had the opportunity to show the moment of truth during the marathon itself, a first for this kind of narrative film, managing to get Bell into the action of the beginning, the middle and the end of the day. Many of these spectators and other runners are the real deal, thinking that this cinematographic Brittany is only one of them. In a way, Bell has done everything possible to prepare for this role in order to make it totally credible, and that is what it does.
Utkarsh Ambudkar (Perfect) like Jern, adding a romantic interest to the procedure; Lil Rel Howery as Demetrius, a brother-in-law and a surrogate father figure; and Alice Lee in the role of Gretchen, a roommate who does not seem to have this new turning point in Brittany's life, but still tries to sound as insipid as she is. Stock and Watkins are also great; the latter recently shared the limelight with Bell in Lynn Shelton's very funny independent film, Sword of confidence. But it is Bell who wins the honors and wins our hearts as a person who proves that it is never too late to do something good, regardless of the height of the mountain.
Colaizzo, a playwright from New York, makes his debut in a good movie, perfectly balancing the laughter and roadblocks of real life. The producers are Margot Hand, Tobey Maguire and Matthew Plouffe. Amazon opens it in a limited version on Friday, before expanding next month. Check out my video review above with scenes from the movie.
