FRISCO – Luke Laufenberg gave fans of Cowboys an emotional glimpse of the Jason Garrett that few people outside the organization have ever seen.
The cowboy radio analyst Babe Laufenberg's son lost his battle with Burkitt's lymphoma early Thursday morning. He was 21 years old.
Jason and Babe have been friends for over 25 years. The Cowboys head coach saw Luke grow up, took his football matches when he could and walked with the Laufenberg family throughout their event.
Garrett was in close contact with Luke and Babe in the last hours. He spoke to both Wednesday night and again with Babe after receiving the tragic news.
A coach ridiculed while robotics was visibly shaken as he entered the interview room Thursday morning for his daily press conference. His hands were shaking when he placed them on the podium. He rubbed his face against the shoulder.
A man who prides himself on looking people in the eye kept his head down so as not to cry. After almost 40 seconds, he was invited to say a few words about Luke.
Garrett took a long sip of a bottle of water and then looked away.
"I'll do my best," he says.
It would take him 11 seconds before he was calm again to answer.
"Luke was an amazing young man," Garrett said, his voice breaking. "You've heard me talk a lot about fighting, I do not think I've ever seen a better example of that in my life."
"What he's been through in the last two years, the spirit he had every day to fight, to always worry about the people in his life." How is my mother? How is my father? How is my brother doing?
"Unbelievable."
It was the day after Christmas 2017 when Luke was diagnosed with cancer. He was declared without cancer five months later. On April 5 of this year, he returned.
On July 12, less than two weeks before the Cowboys left for the training camp, the family was informed that Luke's condition was critical.
Thursday was devoted to Luke, not to Jason Garrett. But the moving tribute of the coach gives an idea of the deep relationship that he forms with so many others around him. He cares. Players and other members of the Cowboys organization know it, even if fans do not know it.
"You came into the room and it went on," Garrett said. "No matter what was happening, he just had that way, that strength that I had never seen, unlike what I've ever seen in my life."
"It's such a tragedy, it's so hard to understand, but I know I'll do it and everyone who knew it will be inspired forever by the life that it has." living. "
