Kit Harington's Marvel Cinematic Universe is out: The star of Game of Thrones will play Dane Whitman, better known as Black Knight, in The Eternals.
The news was announced Saturday at Disney's D23 Biennale in Anaheim, California.
Created in 1966 by writer-publisher Roy Thomas (known to have co-created Luke and Marvel's editor-in-chief after Stan Lee), and artists John Verpoorten and George Tuska, the Black Knight is one of the most obscure characters and rather unique among her super heroic peers.

Whitman is really the Black Knight, or rather a descendant of the original Black Knight of the Arthurian legend. He inherited the coat of the black knight from his uncle, supervillain and member of the Masters of Evil. Whitman's Black Knight joined the Masters of Evil to try to eliminate them from within, a move that ultimately seduced him, as well as the Avengers, which he later joined.
Although Whitman is human, in comics he falls in love with the eternally called Sersi, the main character of "Eternals", who will be portrayed by Gemma Chan in the film. Whitman becomes "Gann Josin" of Sersi, a sophisticated term for the soulmate. But it's more than a simple ceremony like marriage: this relationship is accompanied by a sort of telepathic union between the two.
Black Knight has no innate powers, but he has rather cool abilities of some possessions and even his relationships. When he is related to Sersi, for example, his speed, strength, and other traits are slightly improved. He is an expert fighter and swordsman, and uses a magic sword called the ebony blade, which gives him immunity from magic – and from death. The ebony blade can also cut almost anything that is adamantium – the indestructible metal that binds the bones of Wolverine, which has not yet been introduced into the MCU.

The most intriguing perhaps with the inclusion of Black Knight is that its origins are more or less based on the Arthurian legend. The original Black Knight was Sir Percy of Scandia, who in Marvel Comics was part of King Arthur's court in the 6th century, and Merlin himself gave him the ebony blade. Whitman's Black Knight rides a winged horse named Strider, which was given to him by the Lady of the Lake. Until now, the MCU has not established whether King Arthur actually existed or not in this world, but hey, Thor has turned out real, so …
The director of "The Rider", Chloe Zhao, will direct "The Eternals", along with Matthew and Ryan Firpo ("Ruin") for scriptwriting. The head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, produces. TheWrap also announced that South Korean actor Ma Dong-seok, also known as Don Lee, would make his US film debut.
Created by the legendary comedian Jack Kirby in 1976, the Eternals are an ancient evolutionary branch of humanity whose long life and colorful adventures have inspired legends and long-standing myths.
