– While Hurricane Dorian was moving Saturday to the Bahamas and mainland United States, the severity of its impact in North Carolina was unclear.

Dorian was a Category 4 hurricane Saturday, with 145 mph winds.

The storm is expected to hit the Bahamas early on Sunday, again as a Category 4 storm, which means the wind speed must be constant between 131 and 155 mph.

US and European forecast models keep Dorian off the coast of Florida without directly affecting the state. One expects it to embrace the coast by moving along Georgia and South Carolina.

The American model shows Dorian at the southern tip of the North Carolina coast, crossing the entire coast Thursday afternoon.

The European model shows a slower track, placing Dorian at the southern tip of the North Carolina coast Thursday afternoon and coming out Friday afternoon.

Winds could reach 80 mph Thursday along the coast, and the Wilmington and southeastern regions of the state could receive 10 inches of rain.

Inland areas of the states could see winds of up to 50 mph.

"We can not let our guard down," said WRAL meteorologist Peta Sheerwood.
