The Philadelphia Eagles have officially announced a first wave of cuts in the NFL lineup Friday night. The list currently stands at 65 players. The Eagles will soon reduce their squad to 53 players for the 2019 NFL regular season.
The reduction period of the day of the Bleeding Green Nation has already begun (follow here). Here is some basic information about today's events.
When is the cutoff date?
The 32 NFL teams must be at the limit of 53 players by 4 pm ET Saturday, August 31, 2019.
Will the original Eagles training of 53 people be the one we will see in the first week against Washington?
For the most part, yes, but not entirely. The Eagles could still continue to fine-tune their roster after the deadline based on league discounts. The Eagles could try to claim a player in the position of need on waivers and currently stand in 25th place in the waiver claim order. However, you can not exclude the Eagles from trading at any time when Howie Roseman is in charge.
What about the practice team?
BGN will provide a more detailed explanation of the training team later, but for the moment, know that the Eagles can hire up to 10 players in a training team that does not count against the team of 53 players. These 10 players are usually young, inexperienced NFL players. In order to join the training team, a player must clear the waivers. After clearing the waivers, he becomes a free agent and can then sign with the coaching team.
Note that players from the training team can be signed by any other team at any time. The only problem is that the team that will have it signed will have to keep it for at least three weeks on its active roster and guarantee its salary during this period.
Teams can start training their training team after 1:00 pm ET on Sunday, September 1st.
What is the NFL override cable and how does it work?
In short, a player who is cut and has less than four years of service is put in derogation. The other 31 teams can make a claim to the player and add him to his list of 53 players. If the player is not claimed by waiver, he is free to sign with any team as a free agent without restriction. The waiver order is identical to the NFL's tentative order of 2019, so the Eagles will have the right to claim their 25th claim for any cut made. Teams with the worst records have the highest waiver claim priority. The New York Jets are third in the overall standings, which is remarkable since former Eagles manager Joe Douglas is now their general manager. Douglas might be looking to harvest some of Roseman's cuts.
The waiver period for the weekend ends at 12:00 pm ET on Sunday, September 1st.
