The disturbed application is CamScanner, a program that parses files and converts them to PDF.
Researchers at Kaspersky Security Company have discovered a number of negative reviews on the Google Play profile of the app that complained about the presence of "unwanted features," according to a blog post. The profile page has been removed from the store.
The Android version of the application that was injected with malware from an advertiser could potentially show an "intrusive advertisement" to CamScanner users. The CamScanner iOS app is not affected, according to the company.
Kaspersky claims that the application has been downloaded more than 100 million times. CNN Business has not been able to verify this number.
On its website, CamScanner accuses a third-party advertising company of inserting a "malicious module producing unauthorized ad clicks" into a new version of its Android application. CamScanner said that it was developing an updated version of the app for the Google Play Store and was also offering a direct download from its website.
Google (GOOG) did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
