Pokemon Masters Explainer: All you need to know to get started

Pokemon Masters is officially released for iOS and Android, allowing you to team up with a variety of legendary coaches, gym leaders and champions in a whole new region. Although the basics of the Pokemon series are still present – such as battles and evolutions – many Masters play very differently from a traditional Pokemon game.

To get you started, we've put together all the basics of what you need to know to understand how Masters works. The game takes you to a brand new region where you are associated with Pikachu. Synchronization pairs and their stories

In Masters, you do not catch new Pokemon, you recruit synchronization pairs in your team – and, oh, there are many things to recruit. Each pair includes a legendary coach, a gym manager or a champion and their Pokemon partner. Each pair also has its own story, which is usually played by evolving the Pokemon partner, but can also be unlocked by simply playing with the pair. Unlocking these pairs is usually random, although you can deposit money to get the ones you want.

The synchronization pairs become stronger as they win battles and gain experience. The number of stars next to the name of the coach determines the maximum level that he can reach. For example, most synchronization pairs that you will encounter very early will have three stars and a maximum level of 30. The main exception is Rosa and Snivy, a five-star sync pair, and one of the best partners you can have in your team for the start of the game thanks to their powerful "Time to Energize" synchronization attack. You can increase the number of stars in any pair of sync up to five by using Power-Up items. At five stars, the maximum level is 40.

Once you have earned your first PML Leader badge, you will have the opportunity to further increase this cap. To maximize a pair of synchronization, they must have five stars and be at level 100.

Foundations of the fight

In Masters, Pokemon battles are three-to-three battles between six synchronized pairs. You will have to balance your team as best as possible to account for each battle and defeat all the Pokémon on your opposing team before they beat you. If you need assistance, click "Optimize" when selecting your team for the game to automatically assign the top three synchronization pairs for the job. If you press the automatic mode during a fight, your synchronization pairs will continue to fight for you if you are distracted by real world things and you remain inactive in the game.

Each sync pair has its own HP stats, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed. The first five work all as in previous Pokemon games. Basically, speed works the same way as usual by determining the order in which each Pokémon can attack. However, Masters is not a turn-based RPG like traditional Pokemon games. Instead, the battles take place in real time and each Pokemon move has a recovery rate linked to a gauge. Thus, the speed of a pair of synchronization determines how quickly the Pokemon partner can reload his movements and attack again.

It may not seem like a big enough change for speed statistics, but the Masters start after turn-based battles makes it more important than ever. It's important to keep this in mind as you progress through the game and unlock more powerful moves that require longer recovery times.

Elementary typing and class

Each synchronization pair is assigned one or two type forces and one type weakness. Therefore, do not assume that a fire type Pokémon will automatically be effective against all grass, ice, bugs and steel Pokémons. He will only be strong against one or two of these types. Same thing for weaknesses. Instead of being weak against soil, rock and water, a fire-type Pokémon will be less so. These strengths and weaknesses change according to the timing pair, so that, for example, all fire-type Pokémon do not have the same strengths and weaknesses.

Each pair has not only an elementary type, but also a class typing. Each synchronization pair belongs to one of three classes: strike, support, or technique. When training your team, it is important to keep in mind the typing in class. Even if your basic typing ensures that you have an advantage over your opponent, you may want to replace one of your synchronization pairs with another if they all belong to the same class. For example, a team made up of all technology pairs may not be able to inflict enough damage to take advantage of its dominance of the elements.

Upgrade your movement gauge

Each pair of sync starts with just two moves, one that can be used by the coach and the other by their Pokemon partner. Only Pokemon moves exhaust the movement gauge that allows you to attack. However, coach movements can only be used a number of times at each battle.

You can learn more movements, however, for an initial cap of four. You unlock new moves via Training Machines, or TM. Not to be confused with Technical Machines, or MT, of course – the article that has been used to learn new moves since the first generation of Pokemon games. Why would this be confusing? Supercourses and Rare Objects

Supercours are the most difficult but rewarding variations of the training zones. You will gradually unlock more difficult and rewarding supercourts with each of your complements. However, each supercourse can only be completed three times a day, so you need to determine which pairs need the most energy boost.

Although rare items can be found or purchased, you will not usually encounter them until the Masters campaign is interesting. Until you reach this point, the supercours are the easiest way to unlock them. Your team will have to be very strong to face the high level supercourse, but this is where you can unlock valuable items like Ultra Buff Blend. In contrast, 50 Great Buff Blends are needed to buy an Ultra Buff mix in the game shop. This is something much easier to do but that will take you a lot longer to acquire.

Cooperative game

Daily missions and special events

Every day, new daily missions will be unlocked in Masters. One of them always consists of opening and connecting to the game.
