For the first 10 years, Uber was more or less useless for those who did not have a phone. But this is finally starting to change.
Earlier this month, the giant launched a kiosk at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, which allows passengers to book an exit without a smartphone. The company said it was designed to provide better access to travelers who might have trouble using the application due to language or technology issues.
Much of the technology used in the kiosk is similar to that used in "green light" hubs, where the company boards drivers, said one of the designers of the Toronto kiosk on Twitter. These same kiosks have also been used in shopping malls in the San Francisco area.
"The Uber kiosk has been influenced by arcade games, which, compared to a personal computer at home, create a social environment inviting others to help the main user," said Anurag Agarwalla, manager of the Uber innovation team for its technology services group, a blog post. "This attribute, together with a live technical support representative, provides a human element that we wanted to highlight."
It is not yet known for which locations will be next, but the company hopes to use them to improve access to high volume sites.
