The Houston Texans acquired Kansas City Chiefs midfielder Carlos Hyde in an exchange against guard Martinas Rankin.
The Texans needed help to turn around after starter Lamar Miller tore his ACL in the third pre-season game. Houston also traded against offensive midfielder Duke Johnson Jr. earlier in the month and, although he is expected to retain first place, Hyde will allow Texans to use Johnson more in the passing game.
This transaction is one of many transactions the Texans made that day. Rankin, a third-round pick in 2018, started four games last season (three on the left and one on the left), but struggled as a rookie. Hyde spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the 49ers before dividing the 2018 season between the Browns and the Jaguars. He signed with the chiefs in March. In 14 games last season, Hyde had 571 yards and five touchdowns on 172 carries.
Hyde was the starter base for the first two weeks of the camp, when Damien Williams was out with a sore hamstring. The drop in Hyde's depth began with the emergence of rookie RB Darwin Thompson, who, according to Andy Reid, is ahead of what the Chiefs were expecting for a sixth-round pick.
