Deep Silver Boss believes that the Steam model is "anachronistic" and does not exclude other Epic exclusives

While Epic Games Store had locked many PC exclusives during its first year of existence, one of the first great games to have been signed was Metro Exodus from the Deep Silver publisher. By all accounts, this decision has not hurt Metro Exodus PC sales at all, and it looks like we will see more and more exclusive Deep Silver Epic in the future. Here is what Klemens Kundratitz, CEO of Deep Silver, parent company of Deep Silver, had to say on the subject in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz …

Overall, I still believe, as in the beginning, that as an industry and as a publisher, we should welcome Epic and its business model. We have a close relationship with Epic and we continue to have a strong relationship with Steam. It's just too bad we could not announce [Metro Exodus exclusivity] earlier. It was not perfect.

As a business, we must do what we believe. We also make mistakes, but that's not a mistake. We need to adopt a digital partner that offers a much more compelling revenue sharing model than anyone else, and I think they serve as a model for us and for other digital partners as well – a 70/30 split is frankly anachronistic. We have a lot of games on Steam, including many new releases like Iron Harvest. But I do not exclude to make a new exclusivity with Epic.

The number of publishers that have signed contracts with Epic seems to have slowed slightly in recent months, but I am confident that many publishers will seek to expand their profitable deals. Regarding Deep Silver, Shenmue III is exclusive to Epic, but their next game, Wasteland 3, is not. Dead Island 2 and a new Saint's Row are on the program. We will see what they do with it.

Shenmue III arrives on PC and PS4 on November 19, while Wasteland 3 is expected to release on PC, Xbox One and PS4 in early 2020.
