If you have finished the series, you may have some burning questions to ask: who really won the war between Gelfling and the Skeksis? Has dark crystal evil really been defeated? What does the future hold for our brave heroes? And how does Louis Letterier lead in the classic film that inspired him? We break down all these questions and more here.
The fate of Gelfling
Although he began his journey under the name of traitor, the latest episodes of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance saw Rian (Taron Egerton) seize the legendary weapon repressing the Skeksis known as of Dual Glaive, discovering that his father, Ordon Strong) had waved the blade in front of him. With this knowledge and the support of his partner Deet (Nathalie Emmanuel), imbued with the powers of the Tree, Rian uses the Thra fires to call for a Gelfling rebellion against the Skeks. Before the final battle, Brea, Deet and Rian are reunited with the other Gelfling clans who finally realized that the Skeksis were fighting them. Despite unimaginable odds, the Gelfling are winning and eliminating the enemies they once thought to be immortal with the help of the crystal glow that turns out to be inside the Dual Glaive.
Although this is a happy ending for the Gelfling clans, the same can not be said for Deet. She took the power of the Darkening to beat the Skeksis but seems to have been corrupted, spreading the disease in the woods away from Rian and his family. This moment is particularly important because it seems to set up season 2 and is also something that has been teased since the first episodes. When Deet spoke for the first time of the power of the tree, she had a vision of the future. The montage presents many moments of the series, including the association with Rian, but above all, it shows young Gelfling a vision of herself covered with violet veins and eyes, and her skin a sickly green color. It was a blatant warning that she would end up being corrupted by the power she had to use to save the seven Gelfling clans and, sadly, that happened in the last moments.
This haunted vision is exactly the one where we left the young Gelfling at the end of the episode while she was rotting the woods around her while Rian was chasing her. It seems that saving Deet from The Darkening and that his reach is steadily growing will probably be an essential part of next season … and could even see her become Rian and the enemy of Gelfling as the magical power and dark grows up.The future of Skeksis
Although they are among the most iconic villains in the canon of the family film, little was known about the Skeksis unless one dipped deep into the most esoteric traditions of the dark crystal. Age of Resistance corrected this with the series that followed creatures and explored the motives for their evil deeds. At the end of the season, it was revealed that the Skeksis, unlike the other inhabitants of Thra, were not part of the Force that holds everything in place. This existential crisis was what had driven their desperation to be immortal and their horrible use of the Crystal of Truth to drain the essence of Gelfling in order to prolong their lives.
After being defeated by the Gelfling, the Skeksis do something unthinkable even for them and unleash the power of Darkening on Thra. But before he can do too much damage, Deet assumes the power of the violent illness and uses it to defeat the bird-like beings, forcing them to retreat. We are far from the victorious and all-powerful creatures we met at the beginning of Frank Oz's cult movie. It might be interesting to see how they regained their power. The fact that the scientist (Mark Hamill) invented a new violent weapon known as Garthim – which will be immediately recognizable by the fans of the film – will probably be there for something, especially since the official chronology of Dark Crystal Age of Resistance events just before the so-called "Garthim War".
The garthim and the dark crystal
While watching the fantastic 1982 movie is not a necessity before enjoying Age of Resistance if you're a fan, you'll probably enjoy watching the movie based on the legendary story that was created in the head of the movie. Jim Henson's cult puppetry. As the series drew nearer to its purpose, we received great narrative narratives of the original, as well as moments that directly led to the classic film. The last two episodes showed how the Skeksis created the Garthim – their giant insect-like creatures that acted as a strike force in the 1982 film – from the Arathim who had already teamed up with the Gelfling to help them to beat the monstrous villains resembling birds.
Another key revelation was the connection of the mystical mother to Mother Aughra. It's a connection that is really showcasing when the URVA sacrifices itself to kill the resurrected SkekMal – which has been brought back using Augra's essence – to help save the Gelfling. . We also learn that this is how Aughra was born again, leaving her ready to help Jen and Kira in their mission. The most important moment here, however, was the revelation of Brea's crystal sparkle in the remains of the Dual Glaive. The reason why this is such a big problem is that it seems to be the same one that Aughra gave to Jen as part of his mission, as well as that of Kira, to heal the Crystal of Truth , which means that Age of Resistance has just introduced the ultimate macguffin of the original movie.
Will there be a season two?
Netflix has not yet announced second season but the show has been widely celebrated by critics, and if viewers share their enthusiasm, there is still much to explore in the series. The biggest questions that remain after the finale are what happened after the success of the Gelfling uprising for the eradication of the elven race, almost completely wiped out when we met them in the first act of the fantastic film of 1982. The series could explore Deet's infection and the likelihood that his friends Rian and Brea are trying to save her.
There is also the question of the Gelfling clans and their own political allegiances. This season, they fought and even offered to partner with the Skeksis rather than working together. One of the greatest compliments received by Age of Resistance is its similarity to Game of Thrones' epic construction game. Exploring the inner workings of clans and their struggle during the Garthim War could be a brilliant extension.
