New Mexico coach Bob Davie was taken to hospital after suffering a "serious medical incident" after his university's victory in the night of Saturday to Friday against the United States of America (Sam Houston State, 39-31) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
"We ask you to keep the Davie family in your prayers," sports director Eddie Nunez said in a statement.
Media availability for Davie after the game was canceled. A sports official at the school told the Albuquerque Journal that Davie was suffering from chest pain.
Nunez said that the university will publish more information as they become available.
Davie, 64, has just started his eighth season in New Mexico. He was a coach at Notre Dame from 1997 to 2001 and worked for 10 years as an academic football analyst for ESPN before returning to the touch of New Mexico in 2012. He led the Lobos to a record 9-4 in 2016, but been followed from back to back 3-9 seasons.
New Mexico took a 16-0 lead in the second quarter of the first game of Saturday's season, scoring four consecutive possessions. But the Bearkats took a 23-22 lead in the third, and then watched as the Lobos continued their momentum in the middle of the quarter.
In the round of 16, Sam Houston reached the 24 Lobos at the last minute but could not go further.
New Mexico suspended Davie for 30 days without pay in February 2018, as a result of multiple investigations to determine if he and his coaching staff had interfered in criminal investigations or in malpractice cases involving players. The school did not find that Davie or his staff had obstructed a criminal investigation.
New Mexico will then play at Notre Dame on September 9th, 14th.
