A magnitude 5.0 earthquake hits Alaska, felt in the capital

The earthquake center of Alaska reports that an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 struck southern Alaska. This was felt by the inhabitants of the capital. Juneau.

The center says that the earthquake occurred at 8:32 pm. Saturday and its epicenter was 43 km (70 km) west of Klukwan, a village of about 95 inhabitants. The earthquake had a depth of less than one mile (about one kilometer).

Several Juneau residents said on social media that they felt the earthquake. One person tweeted: "Juneau just had an earthquake … I actually felt it … My bed was literally moving."

No significant damage has been reported.

The last major earthquake to hit Alaska occurred on November 30, when a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near Anchorage.

The 1964 earthquake in Alaska had a magnitude of 9.2.
