Recent reports published on the Japanese BestCarWeb site provide new details on the next-generation Subaru WRX STI 2021. This information has not been confirmed by Subaru Corp, so the rumor is still circulating. We know the next generation of WRX / STI will be available next year and will benefit from major upgrades and the global Subaru platform.
BestCarWeb announces that the new 2021 STI will replace the 2.5-liter EJ25 turbo boxer with the new FA20 direct-injection turbo boxer currently fitted on the sport-tuned WRX sedan. The website says the power will rise to 315 horsepower, 5 horsepower over the current 2.5-liter turbo engine, and produce about 325 lb-ft of torque.

They say that WRX and Levorg, at least in Japan, will buy a new 1.8 and 1.5 liter direct injection turbo boxer. The 1.8-liter would produce 266 horsepower, the 2.0-liter WRX, and the 1.5-liter, 148 horsepower.
The report goes on to say that the STI will not benefit from an automatic transmission option and will remain one of the few remaining vehicles to be offered only with a manual gearbox. The WRX will remain compatible with the 6-speed manual transmission and the Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission with EyeSight driver assistance.
Earlier Road & Track reports indicate that the new Subaru WRX STI 2021 will be equipped with the Ascent, Legacy and the new 277 horsepower FAB Turbo Boxer from Outback. Subaru Tecnica International would modify the internal components and dramatically increase power and torque if they used it in the next generation of WRX STI.
According to reports, the 2.4-liter turbo could generate more than 330 horsepower in the new STI, which would make performance fans happier than the improved 315-horsepower 2.0-liter. Subaru could also use the 2.4-liter turbo engine associated with the new hybrid technology under development.
VIZIV performance concept
We expect the next generation of Subaru WRX 2021, in Concept, to be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in October, giving fans a better idea of the exterior look.
Of course, all this is speculation and this has not been confirmed by Subaru Corp, who has not talked about the revision of the new performance sedan. Subaru needs to replace the aging 2.5-liter Boxer EJ25 of the fourth-generation Subaru WRX STI 2020 and a new supercharged engine will likely get the go-ahead. Stay tuned.
