ORLANDO, Florida (FOX 35 ORLANDO) – While Hurricane Dorian is expected to head north, Orlando International Airport officials now claim that the activities will run as usual at the airport on Monday , and that they will not close – as previously planned. Sunday's travelers were relieved at the news – but still cautious.
"It makes me happy," said traveler Claire Burch. "I hope it will not hit us, but we live in the coastal area, so we take extra precautions."
Burch, who lives in St. Augustine, said she was not taking any chances. "I hope it will not be his Saint Augustine, but we had bad experiences in the past with Irma and Matthew, so we decided to evacuate."
Now, people have one more day to take these flights. Airport officials said they made the decision after closely following the Dorian route and consulting the FAA and air traffic control. They warn, however, that Dorian continues to be a powerful and unpredictable storm, and they will closely monitor the weather to see if they need to make any changes to their plans. Visitors like Michael Corso said that it was wise.
"You can not really follow these events until they get closer to the coast, so it did not really impact our stay here," Corso said.
In addition to Orlando International, Sanford Airport will also remain open. Melbourne Airport will be open Monday to Friday at 6 pm and the conditions followed thereafter. Daytona Beach Airport will be closed Sunday night until further notice. Many travelers say that they were leaving anyway, just in case.
"We are terrified! We live in Brazil," said Lais Cassaro, who came from Brazil, "we do not have those things there."
Airport officials said that even though they were open to competition, it was possible for individual airlines to suffer their own delays or cancellations due to the storm. They strongly suggested contacting your airline if you have a flight on Monday for the latest details.
