Justin Bieber has published on Instagram a very long account of the effect of celebrity on his life.
Sharing a note to his 118 million followers on Monday, the singer described his drug use and the "terrible decisions" that resulted.
"I started drugging myself at age 19 and abusing all my relationships," wrote Bieber. "I became resentful, disrespectful to women and angry. I became distant to all those who loved me, and I hid behind a shell of the person I had become.
"It has taken me years to overcome all these terrible decisions, repair broken relationships and change relationship habits.Luckily, God has blessed me with extraordinary people who love me for me."
It is noteworthy that despite the talk about the learning of kindness and humility, Bieber received criticism earlier this year when he shared a post that defends singer Chris Brown.
"People who have outgrown this man's talent … you must re-evaluate!" wrote Bieber in an Instagram post still online. The original version of the post, by NME, read as follows: "The people who have exceeded the abilities of this talent of the man because of an error that he has committed".
In August 2009, Brown pleaded guilty to a criminal assault charge against his girlfriend at the time, Rihanna. The police report, which describes the extent of the attack, can be read here. Brown was also charged with violent behavior by several other women.
Despite this, Bieber's personal message provoked a positive reaction. A number of his celebrity friends have shared encouraging messages in the comments, and the post has almost 3 million likes at the time of writing.
