Control, the latest game from Remedy Entertainment, has completely invaded my brain. You play as Jesse Faden and explore the Federal Bureau of Control, a federal agency that studies and contains supernatural objects. It turns out that playing a game of secrets and plots will make you believe in secrets and plots. Even though I love to repeat Mike Steev's theory as much as the next girl, a few ControlTheories about the world of the game caught my attention. In particular, the fans theorize that Control takes place in the same universe as the previous game of Remedy Entertainment, Alan Wake. They convinced me.
Remedy Control takes place in New York, far from Alan WakeThe property is located in Bright Falls, Washington. The bureaucratic nightmare of The Oldest House, the brutalist building housing the Federal Control Office, could not feel any further from the impressive small town atmosphere of Alan WakeFrom Washington. But there are links and some of them are pretty obvious. Last night, while I was playing, a character told Jesse Faden that he dreamed of several universes. "In a world, there is a writer who wrote a story about a cop," said this character. "In another world, the cop was real." It seemed to be a reference to both Alan Wake and Max Payne. In Alan Wake, the main character wrote a series of black novels about a cop. Max Payne is a black video game about a cop.
Some references are harder to find but seem to place the events of Alan Wake more concretely in the world of Control. All along Controlyou can find documents on Altered World Events, events where supernatural objects are wreaking havoc in normal people. One of these documents concerns Bright Falls and the devastation caused by Alan Wake.
According to the document at stake, the Federal Bureau of Control traveled to Bright Falls two days after Alan Wake to investigate but did not find much. They also never found Wake's body. Another document catalog the thermos to collect, an article of Alan Wake that players collect for an exploit, as a modified object modified by the Federal Bureau of Control.
If you're still not convinced, it may help Alan Wake himself Control. If you go exploring on the fifth floor of the Panopticon in the Confinement area after acquiring the levitation ability, you will discover a hidden area with Wake and the thermos. This video shows you how to find both things:
Although I can not say with certainty that these references are indicative of a larger shared universe or just something fun to find for fans, I like the idea of Alan Wake and Control taking place in the same world. At the very least, I like the idea that an organization is trying to regain the Wake spirit. He deserves a victory. The reason why I personally tend to believe that this theory relates to a group that appears both in Control and Alan Wake.
In the research sector of Controlyou can find a listening room that plays a song from the group Old Guards of Asgard. The old Asgard guards are also in Alan Wake and its follow-up, The American nightmare of Alan Wake. If you listen to the song that plays on the credits of American nightmare and play upside down, you can hear someone say, "It will happen again in another city. A city called Ordinary. Where does Jesse Faden come from? A city called ordinary. Mate, bastards.
