The developers of Dragon Quest XI S embark on a "crushed" hero in Smash Bros.

We had the chance to sit down with some of the developers of the next Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Final Edition recently in PAX and after discussing the journey of this game to Switch, we interviewed producer Hokuto Okamoto, sub-producer Hikari Kubota and development director Masato Yagi pressing question in the minds of Nintendo players: why is Hero so dominated? Super Smash Bros.?

There has been heated debate among fans regarding the newest addition to the ever-growing list, many suggesting that the random elements of its movement set make it overpowering (or "OP" in fighter jargon) ). After asking the light question at the end of our interview, the group laughed before thinking about it:

Kubota: It's because Mr. Sakurai loves him so much.

Okamoto: Is he powerful?

Nintendo Life: Many tournament players are wondering whether or not he should ban it …

Okamoto: It's not because it's too powerful, it's because the random element is too powerful, right?

Uh … in a nutshell … in a way.

It seems like a lot of the quirks and abilities of the character come from a profusion of ideas from the guru of Smash Bros. and supervisor Masahiro Sakurai. Mr. Kubota explained the many skills of the DLC character:

Kubota: We thought it would be easy to place it in Smash, but from Mr. Sakurai, there were all those ideas that were going to be added after the fact, like setting up a command window turn by tower.

Producer Hokuto Okamoto went on to explain that Hero's randomness offered an accessible access point for less experienced players:

Okamoto: You know, as a member of the Dragon Quest team, we create games, as we've said before, that we want people to get through the whole thing – everyone should be able to read our games. But you arrive at Smash Bros. and you are dealing with an action fighting game. As this skill ceiling increases, there are people who will not be able to follow, just like people who can not play at a certain level of difficulty.

So, I think that with Hero's Dragon Quest XI, because the strength of his randomness is sometimes so powerful, it gives him the appeal of becoming a character who is (for) someone who is a hangman of buttons, (they) can enter and deliver very powerful blows. And I think it's a good point on the character.

While Banjo and Kazooie join the fray and two more challengers are coming (we crossed our fingers for an announcement in the Nintendo Direct of tomorrow), the downloadable content of Smash seems to have gone very smoothly for the most part, Hero included, but you can not please everyone.
