"The president needs to step in here and set guidelines for what he would do," said Blunt, a member of the Senate leadership. "I'm afraid what's going to happen here is not what's always happening, that's what we take as an idiot" if we do not get everything, we'll do nothing. "
Several laws were reviewed, some dealing with firearms, others on mental health issues.
In August, consecutive mass shootings in Texas and Ohio left at least 32 dead – including the shooter in Ohio – and last weekend an armed man in Texas killed and wounded seven people more than 20 in a shootout before being shot. dead by the police. These attacks sparked a growing outcry from Congress, which decided to take action on its return from this week's summer holidays.
Blunt suggested that some legislative options would allow for faster intervention of people with mental health issues and called for "treating mental health like any other health, which I've worked a lot on."
"There is a moment when we can develop what we are already doing on this front," he said.
