In a not-so-humble evening on Wednesday night, Tesla boasted of breaking the record for the fastest four-door sedan at Laguna Seca, Monterey, California's famous racing track.
The company took the wheel with a new prototype version of its pure battery electric sedan, the Model S, one with 3 engines and a new powertrain "Plaid".
The official Twitter account of the company sang: "We doubled Laguna Seca @WeatherTechRcwy in 1: 36,555 during research and development testing of our powertrain prototype and body chassis model S Plaid (a second faster than the record of a four-door sedan) "
The next closest record for a four-door was set by a 2015 Cadillac CTSV in 2015.
A video shared by Tesla showed a pilot taking a ride at Laguna Seca, reaching speeds of up to 115 miles at some sections. Tesla did not reveal the name of the person driving, but said in a subsequent tweet that she was "a member of Tesla's development team (amateur driver)".
Elon Musk presented the tour as a "record" in a previous tweet. He wrote on Tuesday: "The Model S just set the record for the fastest 4-door ever made at Laguna Seca, tmrw video."
But a spokesman for Laguna Seca wrote in an e-mail to CNBC: "We did not officiate while the Tesla was conducting tests on the track, official recordings only occur at events sanctioned by a sanctioning body. "
Tesla said he does not have any other information to offer on the Laguna Seca tour at the moment.
The powerplant Plaid will eventually be included in future versions of Tesla models S, X and Roadster models, but not in its 3 or Y models, according to CEO Elon Musk. He revealed this information, as well as vague pricing details, while chatting with his supporters and fans on the social network, also on Wednesday night.
Musk wrote, "Yes, to be clear, Plaid's powertrain is about a year from production and applies to S, X and Roadster, but not to 3 or Y. It will cost more than our current offers, but less than our competitors. " Responding to questions from fans and subscribers on Twitter, Musk also revealed that the company plans to offer its Plaid powertrain for the "base" and more expensive versions of the "founders' series" of the new version of the Roadster.
Last week, Musk announced that it would send a Model S to the Nürburgring, evoking a particularly difficult circuit, the Nordschleife a.k.a. "Green Hell". This promise implied that Musk believes the Model S is the best tool for Porsche's new electric battery offer, Taycan, in its own territory.
After some mocking remarks about the Taycan, Musk finally took up the challenge by writing that the EV Porsche seemed like a good car and had a great time at Nürburgring.
Since Musk rejected the challenge of the Model S, Nico Rosberg – the race car driver – has publicly offered his services for the eventual record attempt in what should be a modified and modified version of the Model S.
