A former Cincinnati Bengal defender, visiting his grandmother in California, was shot dead in his garden this week, family members said.

Terrell Roberts, who played in 23 games with the Bengals in 2003-2004, was shot dead Wednesday night in a Richmond residence, where an intruder entered the home, KPIX relatives said.

Roberts, 38, was "not involved in anything bad" and had no known enemies, relatives said.

No suspects were in custody Thursday, reported the newspaper Mercury News.

A message asking for additional comments from the Richmond Police Department was not sent back early Thursday.

Roberts, a native of Berkeley, California, attended El Cerrito High School and Oregon State University before being signed by the Bengals in 2003. He was released by the team during the 2005 season.

The news of Roberts' death began spreading on social media early Thursday, causing tributes from former teammates.

"The man is tired of waking up every day with bad news," retired tackle Shaun Smith tweeted. "Another of my former teammates [was] Terrell Roberts, one of the strongest DBs to play the game remains quiet my boy. "

The current Oregon State coach, Jonathan Smith, was also a Roberts teammate.

"I am shocked by the announcement of the death of my teammate and friend Terrell Roberts," Jonathan Smith tweeted. "Pray for his family and friends during this difficult time."
