Jorge Ramos, Univision presenter and moderator of the Democratic debate in Houston Wednesday, welcomed the Spanish-speaking audience: "Despite the fact that we are going through a difficult time, our country too."

The presenter, known for his advocacy for the rights of migrants on the southern border of the United States, opened the night saying: "We are pleased to have had the opportunity to welcome Latinos across the country and to ask questions about the problems of Latinos in these difficult times.

Ramos also moderated a Democratic primary debate in 2016, which he revealed at the start of this event. His daughter Paola was a member of Clinton's staff, but he is committed to remaining impartial during the elections.

Ramos, however, during the Republican presidential election cycle, found himself face to face with the then candidate, Donald Trump.

At an event in Dubuque, Iowa, in 2015, he asked a question to Trump without being asked. Trump asked Ramos to "sit down" and "come back to Univision". The anchor of Univision was thrown out of the event.

In 2018, when asked about his partisan political activism about Trump's coverage, Ramos replied, "Am I supposed to be neutral when the US President makes racist remarks? When he says that Mexican immigrants are criminals and rapists, or when he says that Judge Gonzalo Curiel can not do his job, simply because of his Mexican heritage?
