Driven by home runs (again) and another good start from Jorge Lopez (?), Les Royals won the season series against the White Sox with a 6-3 win on Thursday afternoon.
Jorge Soler remained very hot, starting in the afternoon by beating an absolute tank with a point lost first to give the Royals a quick 1-0 lead. The home run has traveled 445 feet, left Soler's stick at 112 MPH and is his third home run in the last 18 hours.
After another race in Kansas City in 3rd, the White Sox reduced that lead in two on a simple jam played by Eloy Jimenez in the shallow center field. However, Whit Merrifield made a fantastic dive stop and managed to get rid of Jose Abreu by trying to score in second place to keep a 2-1 game.
The Royals had the chance to meet Lucas Giolito, the starter of the White Sox. With Whit Merrifield in 3rd, Giolito eliminated eight consecutive Royals, ending the series with the victory of Nicky Lopez in the 5th. After five minutes, Giolito had ten strikeouts.
Although not as brilliant, the Royals starter, Jorge Lopez, was also quietly preparing for a good start. Aside from an undeserved race in the 3rd, Lopez went in the 5th, where he had some trouble.
Adam Engel debuted with an infield single and came in third on a single from Yoan Moncada. Lopez almost received a gift when Moncada tried to double twice, but he finally thought about it. Lopez is put in a position to get a double game after the end of the round after Tim Anderson has seized 2nd place. Instead, Abreu made his 115th round of the season with a sacrificial volley in the center, equalizing the match at 2-2.
Lopez pushed Jimenez to the ground, ending a run that could have ended much worse. And this is especially true for Lopez, with the opposing hitter who hit a huge .536 with riders on the base and no one came out.
Including his eight consecutive strikeouts, Giolito pulled out 10 consecutive Royals before goal 6, but that quickly ended. Merrifield started with a walk and moved to second place on a Soler single. Hunter Dozier then hit his 26th circuit of the season, placing the Royals 5-2. Dozier is only one of the two players most affected by the base, while he missed nearly a month of games.
Giolito responded with two more catches, giving him 12 afternoons. That left him only one barrier to equal his career-high 13 goals on August 11th. Giolito has recently achieved an incredible feat, with four of his seven double-digit dam performances over the past 32 days. . Since August 11, Giolito and Justin Verlander have 58 punches, the most in baseball.
The White Sox offensive also reacted positively to the Dozier home run. James McCann dominated the second half of the sixth inning with a 1-2 finish and was third in a Daniel Palka infield single. It should be noted that the success was Palka's second in the season in 57 at bat. For those who do the math at home, it's a batting average of 0.035. He went into the attack with a 0.018 hit, so the shot literally doubled his batting average.
But these are minor details. Kansas City was again able to limit the damage by allowing only one point while the first and third row runners had no absent player. Yolmer Sanchez brought McCann home before replacing Lopez with Tim Hill and eliminating Danny Mendrick and Engel to end the heat.
It was not good, but Lopez had his second good start. Despite giving eight hits and two walks in just 5.1 innings, Lopez managed to limit the White Sox to two earned runs.
The White Sox threatened again to enter the 7th match, but Kansas City took a big break. It looked as though McCann had gotten one point out of two with a point left, but Anderson slipped back around the third goal and had to stay put, charging the goals. Gabe Speier was forced to face Palka, but faced Leury Garcia, a shot putter, and was able to hit him, ending the inning.
The Royals added one point in the 9th for good, scoring 6-3 on a wild 3-0 field that allowed Bubba Starling to score. Striker Adalberto Mondesi is also beaten on the ground to stay on the mark.
Chicago was not going to make things easier, though. Ian Kennedy worked hard, allowing the White Sox to charge the goals and lead the winning race to Garcia with two outs. Upon entering the afternoon, Garcia was 0-12 against Kennedy with some walks under his belt.
However, Kennedy eliminated Garcia on his 29th throw to record his 29th save and secure a series win. The playoffs also won the season and gave the Royals their 55th win of the season. They have to go 8-7 the rest of the way to avoid losing 100 games.
