When pop superstar Sam Smith announced earlier this year that she identified as non-binary and sexist, many fans asked if the star still wanted fans to use the "he / she" pronouns. Today, Smith has answered their question.

On Friday, Smith visited their Instagram to let fans know that they were publicly changing their favorite pronouns into "they" after years of wondering how to relate to each other.

"After a life of war with my kind, I decided to embrace for what I am, internally and externally," they wrote. "I am so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people who support me in this decision, but I was very worried about announcing it because I care too much about what people think but it does not help. is not that! The singer "Stay With Me" said that he knew that people would struggle with the new pronouns, but that he hoped people would finally accept their choice.

"I understand that there will be a lot of mistakes and misunderstandings [sic] but all I ask you is that you try it, "they wrote." I hope you can see me as I see myself now. "

Finally, Smith said they still had a lot to learn about being non-binary and directing fans to "activists and leaders of the non-binary / trans community" who had helped them to to learn more about their sexual expression.

"For the moment, I just want to be visible and open," they wrote. "If you have questions and wonder what all this means, I will do my best to explain, but I have also labeled below the human beings who fight every day for the fight."
