The 23-year-old was found in a car burned this month in Clewiston, Florida, CNN affiliate WBBH said.
"It was a human person," said Desmond Vereen, who organized a wake after Slater's death at the branch. "She loved being surrounded by people and meeting new people also because of her new lifestyle she transitioned to."
The Hendry County Sheriff's Office stated that he was always looking for a motive. He told CNN's subsidiary, WZVN, that she had to use dental records to identify the body, as it was badly burned during his assassination on 4 September.
"We can not yet assert that it is a hate crime because we do not know the motive.A hate crime, it's a bit More than that, it's an accusation of improvement, "said Captain Susan Harrelle of the Hendry County Sheriff's Office to WZVN.
"Our society must work for transsexuals to live without fear," said the American Civil Rights Union.
Slater was killed the same week as Bailey Reeves, a 17-year-old transgender woman, shot on Labor Day.
Reeves was shot and wounded in a Baltimore neighborhood after leaving a party, CNN affiliate WMAR said.
"It was unjustified, there was no reason for it," said his brother, Thomas Reeves, to CNN's affiliate, WBFF. The affiliate reported that she was suffering from several gunshot wounds.
Of the 18 known transgender people killed this year, 11 have died of gun violence, the Human Rights Campaign reported.
"As we gather at meetings and in community spaces, our sisters are constantly in danger," said the Transgender Law Center, a civil rights organization, says on Twitter. "And that's why we are fighting – so Bee and Bailey, who were kidnapped this week, are not forgotten. We never forget why we do this job: keep our people alive, thrive and fight for liberation. "
