There are many rules to follow when you are a member of the royal family. Of course, the rules are made to be broken and many have been dismissed either because of special circumstances or by negligence at one time or another. The only rule that Queen Elizabeth places above all others, however, is her rule of thumb: "Never complain, never explain."
The rule is attributed to many different sources, but the queen says that she followed the advice of her own mother and that it has served her well for decades on the throne. It now seems that the Queen's grandson, Prince Harry, has forgotten this important rule and is paying the price.
Duke and Duchess of Sussex often violate tradition
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle frequently violate the royal tradition. Markle's sartorial choices and the couple's decision to keep their son's baptism as a private affair, as well as the way they kissed on their wedding day, allow the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to leave their expectations.
These actions have drawn criticism from some fans of the royal family, but others see the couple as representing a new and modern era. Some fans are particularly impressed by the couple's feminist acts and break with a tradition that seems to empower and more closely reflects progressive values.
The last incident concerns air transport
Some of the couple's decisions to break with tradition can be explained by their values, but the latest is more a result of their preferences for comfort and safety. Prince Harry is a strong supporter of conservation efforts in the face of climate change. That's why critics criticize the fact that he's using the plane trip with his family as blatant hypocrisy.
While he and other members of the royal family usually travel by plane, Prince Harry and his family sometimes took private planes. On a recent trip, they were flown by Elton John, a close friend of Prince Harry's late mother, Princess Diana. John defended his gift, insisting that the carbon impact was offset by a contribution to the carbon footprint.
Nevertheless, many members of the public were not happy about what they considered an extravagant travel choice, unbecoming someone who was denouncing waste.
Prince Harry Breaches Queen Elizabeth's Rule of Gold
If Prince Harry followed his grandmother's golden rule, he would be silent in the face of criticism. After all, his motto clearly indicates "never to explain".
Prince Harry; however, did not follow this crucial advice. Instead, he tried to explain his decision by focusing on the safety of his family. He justified his extravagance by claiming that he exploited "99%" of commercial time. He stated that when he decided to use a private flight, the safety of his family was a key concern and it was a question of finding a "balance".
As the queen had predicted, the explanations gave way to even more criticism. She believes that the "never explain" part of her rule is important because the explanations give the public the feeling that they have the right to make more comments and to make more judgments. This is certainly what happened in this case.
Since Prince Harry presented his explanations, critics like royal author Duncan Larcombe have called him a liar. Larcombe said Hello Brittany Host Susanna Reid said, "I guess 40% of the time he spends in private flying, he's lying." He then added that his excuse about family safety was inadequate since Prince William, Heir to the throne and probably more vulnerable to threats, traveled with his family.
If Prince Harry had followed the Queen's advice and simply refused to engage with the critics, he might have avoided this deeper scandal. In the current state of things, it seems that he will continue to receive criticism for a while.
