Coffee spill in cockpit invites to drift transatlantic flight

Drinking hot coffee in the cockpit can be a very dangerous thing … and expensive too. Ask a Condor pilot.

On February 06, a Condor flight from Frankfurt to Cancun operated by an Airbus A330-300 was diverted to Shannon Airport (SNN) in Ireland.

The pilots complained of smoke and a burning smell, which caused the unexpected hijacking. None of the 326 passengers or 11 crewmembers were injured.

As for each diversion of a British-flagged aircraft, the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) conducted a thorough investigation (Condor is German, but owned by Thomas Cook).

The investigators discovered that coffee was the culprit. The captain placed his cup on a tray rather than a cup holder because Condor's coffee cups were too small for the cup holder. In one way or another, the coffee is spilled, reversing an audio control power and emitting a strong burning smell and smoke.

Condor reacted to the incident by:

  • Supply of cup lids on all flights
  • Reminding pilots to pay attention
  • provide cups that are better suited for cupholders

A spokesman for Condor told The Guardian:

The DE2116 flight from Frankfurt to CancĂșn, on February 6, 2019, was diverted to Shannon Airport as a precaution due to a small amount of smoke in the cockpit after a liquid spill.

Once the aircraft was inspected and repaired by our engineering team, the flight continued via Manchester due to the legal operating hours of the crew. We conducted a thorough investigation of this incident and reviewed the procedures for liquids in the cockpit.

Our crews have been recalled [the need for] careful handling as well as using appropriate containers for their water or coffee. We apologize for the inconvenience that the diversion could have caused to our guests.

CONCLUSION

It's a bit unfair to blame the driver here if the cup holders are not compatible with Condor's coffee mugs. Fortunately, no one was hurt, although this small coffee spill cost Condor up to $ 100,000. It's a cup of expensive coffee …
