David Ortiz said that he was still trying to mentally deal with the shooting at a Dominican nightclub that had badly hurt him and did not know what had led to the attack.
The retired Boston Red Sox slugger spoke to Univision in an interview published on Friday, his first since shooting on June 9.
Ortiz refuted the suppositions that he would be a target and asserted that he was not involved in anything that could have led to an attack.
"I do not have enemies, I do not know why anyone would want to do that to me," he said.
As for any suspicion around him, he takes it personally.
"I almost died, man," he said to Univision, tears in his eyes. "I was in a coma, people criticized me as if I deserved to be killed."
Ortiz, the most valuable World Series player in 2013 in the Boston championship team, was injured in the back by an armed man who opened fire at close range, wounding him on the chest, announced the police. They said the target was another man.
He called the moment surreal and said that he was wondering if he would survive.
"When the ball hit me, the first thing I felt was like a sting." The first five seconds, I thought I had a nightmare. [Then] a man named Eliezer, for whom I am very grateful, he helped me and took me to the hospital, "Ortiz told Univision.
"I felt something that I had never felt before, and it was just the feeling of trying to survive," he added.
Doctors from Santo Domingo have removed the gall bladder and part of Ortiz's bowel. The next day, he was flown on a Red Sox plane bound for Boston, where he underwent another surgery.
Earlier in the week, Ortiz made his first public appearance since shooting, launching the first pitch before the Red Sox played the New York Yankees at Fenway Park. Ortiz thanked the fans for their prayers and support.
