Former NFL player Edawn Coughman was arrested on Wednesday because he was suspected of vandalizing his own restaurants.
Coughman, 31, would have been recognized as the author of two attacks on local restaurants in Gwinette County, Georgia, belonging to the former NFL striker.
After witnesses described an act of vandalism at one of his restaurants, Coughman was reportedly arrested in a suspicious vehicle with a crowbar and other objects corresponding to the crime he was charged with .
The police claimed that Coughman had scribbled "MAGA" and racial epithets on the walls of his company, alleging that he was trying to gather information about an insurance scam by organizing a hate crime.
"It's possible that he's trying to portray this as a hate-motivated crime," said an investigator. "We do not know if he was trying to draw attention to that. What we do know is that if this witness had not called us and if these officers were not there had not responded as quickly as they had done, we would probably be sitting here talking about a completely different crime in which Mr. Coughman would try to say that he is a victim. "
"The case does not fit the mold of our typical criminal investigations," said one official. "So we have to look outside the box to see how many victims we really have."
