Ric Ocasek, leader of the group The Cars, is dead, confirmed a spokesman of the department of police of New York. He was 75 years old.

According to NBC New York, the musician was found Sunday afternoon after police responded to the call of an unconscious man in a Manhattan townhouse. He was reportedly dead on the scene. The details of his cause of death have not yet been revealed.

In 2018, model Paulina Porizkova, married to Ocasek in 1989, revealed that the couple was "peacefully separated for a year." The news came shortly after The Cars was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

With the two sons shared with Porizkova – 25-year-old Jonathan and 20-year-old Oliver – Ocasek was the father of four other sons, two of his two previous marriages.

Born Richard Theodore Otcasek, the rocker also played in the acting game, with a remarkable cameo in 1988 Hairspray.

Tributes are already pouring in for the star, known for hits like "My Best Friend's Girl", "Good Times Roll" and "You Might Think", which won the Video of the Year award in 1984 at the first VMAs of MTV. (Although Ocasek played an important role in the video of "Drive" alongside the future wife Porizkova and that he was credited with writing the winners of 1984, the bassist of The Cars , Benjamin Orr, actually interpreted these songs.)
