Novice referee, Adrian Hill, was baptized with the F-bomb on Sunday, thanks to a controversial controversy from early 2018 that hardened the smuggler's call and that extended what became the Bears' winning record in Denver.

Hill's decision linebacker flag of Broncos Bradley Chubb gave the Bears another 15 yards, helping set the stage for Eddie Piñeiro's 53-yard referee. However, he did not seem to be brutal from any angle.

Although Hill can privately hear the negative reactions of 345 Park Avenue, the powers in place encircle the wagons, reversing Hill's decision to "judge" the Bears' 15-yard mark.

Well, yes, it's a judgment. But the judgment can be poorly exercised. As was the case for Hill, who may have just made a call to Bears doubtful penalty of roughness from earlier in the game, when Bears defensive lineman Eddie Goldman appeared to apply a legal move to Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco. Both calls appeared to be an effort to address the "body weight" issue that the NFL had adopted early last year, until supporters, media and teams began to cry to force the league to soften its position.

The good news for the league is that Hill's apparent mistake is not the most egregious example of being unfit for Sunday, making it much less likely to resonate at the end of the week. The bad news for the league is that Hill's apparent mistake was not the most egregious example of being unable to officiate on Sunday.
