The iPhone 5G in 2020 lets Apple wait for next-generation technology

While rival smartphones could singer Apple by launching a non-5G iPhone on its flagship product this year, the reality is that there is so little coverage so far that it's almost useless.

Waiting a year also allows Apple to benefit from two upcoming developments in 5G chips …

As CNET note, there are two problems with today's 5G chips.

The way smartphones use 5G networks – as soon as possible – is complicated.

The phones must have a 5G compatible chip and a corresponding 5G modem to connect to the network (for the moment, they are separate and take up space). In addition, each phone model only works with the tapes of a specific network. You can not carry your 5G phone from one operator to another.

Soon, however, new chips will come that will combine the parts into a smaller package that could make the 5G phones thinner and cheaper. And multimodal modems will mean that only one phone could potentially jump networks.

While waiting longer for the technology to evolve, Apple avoids this early entanglement of the type of phone that works where. This is just the latest example of the company that has recently launched an advanced version of the technology developed by its Android rivals.

Samsung and Huawei have both integrated 5G modems into the processors planned for next year's Android smartphones. Of course, Apple is designing its own A-Series chips. Therefore, you will not use any of these commercially available solutions, but the new chips act as a proof of concept. At the end of the struggles of the iPhone manufacturer with Qualcomm, he would be able to negotiate the rights to incorporate the wireless chips manufacturer's 5G circuits to the future chips of the A-series. In the longer term, Apple plans to bypass Qualcomm and design its own 5G modem circuits.

CNET suggests that the loyalty of Apple customers facilitates making this type of decision for the Cupertino company.

Although phone sales have faded for the entire industry, Apple has managed to preserve the cult mystic of the iPhone, and people who have been waiting three or four years to upgrade will probably not wait.

The big question will be whether we will also have iPad 5G next year. The technology will almost certainly come first on the iPhone because Apple first likes to introduce new developments to its best-selling product line, but a 5G iPad would definitely be great to see soon after. One report even suggested that we see MacBooks with 5G capabilities.
