Recent images from Tesla's Gigafactory 3 complex in Shanghai suggest that the electric car manufacturer's construction partner is busy preparing what appears to be building another gigantic facility at the south end of the general assembly building . Neither Tesla nor local reports have revealed what the next installation would be, although recent tweets from CEO Elon Musk suggest that the new building could help Gigafactory 3 produce batteries and powertrains for the 3 and Y models.
During a recent interaction on Twitter, Musk said Gigafactory Shanghai would produce "cars, batteries and driving units" on the same site. This strategy is very different from that of Tesla in the United States, which involves assembling vehicles at the Fremont plant and producing batteries and drive units at Gigafactory Nevada. Tesla's installation in China is likely to be beneficial for the electric car manufacturer, as parts manufacturing and vehicle assembly could be done in a complex.
Phase 1 of Gigafactory 3 construction has recently been completed as the general assembly building of the site's vehicle is almost ready for activation. Images and video taken inside the huge building suggest that a Model 3 assembly line is already in place and that manufacturing robots have been installed. Just in the days leading up to Elon Musk's recent visit to China, pictures from inside Gigafactory 3 revealed that the electric car manufacturer was already testing the Model 3 assembly line.
However, with Phase 1 complete, most of the more visible updates at Gigafactory 3 are at the south end of the site, where several cranes and pile driving systems are currently deployed. The same machines were deployed at the very beginning of construction of the General Assembly building, which suggests that preparations are underway for a massive new build in the Gigafactory 3 complex. The area where these activities are taking place could be seen in a recent video of drone operator Jason Yang, who follows the development of the site since its inauguration ceremony in January.
Aside from the potential size of the new structure that will go from phase 2 of building Gigafactory 3, the current pace of work on the site is also very impressive. Statements from several of the complex's workers indicate that Gigafactory 3's operations continue to adopt a 24/7 program, even though Phase 1 is being completed.
