Two tourists are facing criminal charges for closely examining the Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park, officials said.
The men were photographed last week on the outskirts of Old Faithful, plunging their gaze into the natural wonder – seemingly oblivious to the fact that they could have been badly burned, or worse, if boiling water had burst, like every hour.
The tourists, one with a phone in his right hand and apparently taking a personal snapshot of Old Faithful, were unaware of the signs that are important on the park's trails, said a witness.
"And no, there is no barrier. They just left the sidewalk, "NBC News told a woman on Monday who had photographed the tourists who behaved badly.
She said that signs are everywhere in the park, "including just off the sidewalk where they came down."
The unidentified men were summoned for thermal intrusion and are scheduled to appear in federal court in December, according to KRTV, a local chain in Great Falls, Montana.
Federal prosecutors and officials of Yellowstone National Park could not be contacted immediately for a comment on Monday.
Yellowstone, while not mentioning these two men, warned visitors Friday to be careful by taking pictures around the sprawling park, which overflows into Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.
"No picture is worth hurting yourself, hurting others or the park, be aware of your surroundings, be it near wildlife, hot springs, roads or steep cliffs," according to a tweet from the park Yellowstone National Park.
