"The second I landed, I felt the bursts in my arm," said Brinkley, 65, to People. "As if, I literally felt it in my wrist, and I immediately looked up to say," I'm really sorry, I broke my arm. "

"There is a little bone in the thumb that usually shows meaning," she added. "Mine was in the opposite direction. Then there was a bone, just that, it was just broken into a thousand little pieces, just millions of small pieces.

His daughter, 21-year-old Sailor Brinkley-Cook, will replace her mother in the contest and participate in the premiere on Monday night.

In a statement to GMA On Monday, Brinkley joked, "Showbiz is a break, and Sailor and I had a break. Dance with the stars this season. Sailor joined the cast when I got mine … or someone stops me, it hurts to laugh!

BBC Studios and ABC said in a statement to PEOPLE that Brinkley "suffered injuries requiring surgery on the wrist and arm".

"We wish Christie a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her, wherever possible, to proudly support Sailor," the statement said.

The announcement was made Monday morning before the premiere of the two-hour season, and Brinkley said the situation was catastrophic.

"It was really, really an overwhelming disappointment, overwhelming in every way," she said. "Literally, figuratively, everything that has happened. And one of the worst feelings is to feel that you are dropping someone, you know? And I had the impression that my coach had worked so hard for me on this special choreography. "

"And instantly, I've had a whirlwind like, I leave my coach, I drop the show, I drop ABC, I leave my fans on Instagram," she recalls. "My friends who have been so encouraging and the feeling of dropping people are really awful. So I thought, I have to find a silver lining here. And I immediately thought, because of the personal nature of the song and all the rest, that it's one of my daughters. "

While Sailor (who, according to her mother, is very afraid of the theater) was reluctant to seize this opportunity and did not have much time to repeat, Brinkley said she did not doubt that she was the right woman for the post.

"Sailor is really a fearless, strong and amazing person who always impresses me," she said.

She added, "They put it in my costumes. They fit him perfectly. "

Brinkley even met Sailor from bed during the rehearsals – and was amazed at his progress.

"I saw the joy on Sailor's face," she said. "And I said, honey, I can say you like it. Overcoming your fear, you have discovered a new passion, a new joy. And she said, "I know, mom, thanks." You know, it's like, I mean, it's like the golden lining. "
