Apple is finally launching Arcade, its game subscription service, later this week. One of the elements that animated this launch is the wide variety of games on offer.
It's a sneaky strategy: so far, most wars between video game stores have been focused on the number of proprietary platform-exclusive titles. While Arcade may not have a lot of familiar names, it's tired of attracting serious attention, and many independent owners are receiving a tremendous amount of attention from their Apple owners.
Before launching Arcade later this week, here's a brief overview of the types of games you can expect.
Familiar names
Arcade has some recognizable franchise names, though in all fairness, he announces them just as much as the new independents. At its big event last week, Apple introduced a mobile version of one of the classics of the game: Frogger in Toytown, a colorful highway crossing game featuring the original roadkill.
Other similar names include Sonic Racing, featuring the favorite bipedal hedgehog of all; Pac-Man Royal Party, which offers a Pac-Man fighting mode against Pac-Man; Ubisoft Rayman Mini, officially revealed earlier today; and Shantae and the seven mermaids, which will not be exclusive to Arcade but seems to be fun anyway.
There are some games that are suites or fallout of the popular games of the past years. For example, Devolver did Take out the gungeon, an emanation of its popular roguelike shooter. Arcade will also have cyberpunk Beyond a sky of steel, a continuation of the classic 90-point point-and-click adventure game Under a steel sky.
People who brought you …
Other games are original concepts but have familiar names that make them. One of the most prolific so far is Annapurna Interactive, the company behind Florence and What remains of Edith Finch. They bring at least three games to Arcade, including a musical adventure Artistic escape, endless motorcycle racer moto motorbike Sayonara Wild Hearts, and The pathless, a collaboration with Giant Squid and apparently a follow-up of his oceanic opera, Abzu.
Some large companies are also launching projects on Arcade – the most remarkable, in my opinion, is Various Daylife, a new turn-based RPG from Square Enix. Capcom is also behind Shinsekai Deep Sea, a platform game that takes place at the bottom of the ocean.
The saint you do not know
That's not to say that Arcade is going into name recognition. On the contrary, many of his games are relative unknowns. But Apple has drawn attention to many of these games. Today, they have released a press release highlighting independent developer games. By the road.
Among the games seen so far, my favorite is Hot LavaJenny LeClue, a mysterious adventure game featuring the legendary children's detective, is another cool title: Jenny LeClue.
So far, only about 50 games have been named as part of Apple's initial training. But Apple has announced that we will have more than 100 games to launch, which means that we will have a number of surprises for the launch day. And so far, what we have seen is wide enough to please a myriad of tastes.
Apple Arcade will be officially launched on September 19th.
