Pence brings his first motorcade to a small car-free island in Michigan

Michigan's Mackinac Island has prohibited motorized transportation since 1898; Residents and visitors were therefore taken aback when they saw Vice President Mike Pence's eight motorcade parade through the streets on Saturday.

The island prohibits any use of motive power, with the exception of emergency vehicles, snowmobiles and government owned service vehicles. Most of the people on the small island surrounded by Lake Huron walk or bike along with horse-drawn carriages.

Pence used the motorcade to travel from Mackinac Island Airport to the hotel where he spoke at the Michigan Republican Party's biennial conference, the first vice-president to speak at the conference for more than six decades.

Only one president, Gerald Ford, visited Mackinac Island during his tenure and used a horse-drawn carriage to travel. Other presidents such as George H. W. Bush, Harry Truman, Bill Clinton and John F. Kennedy went before and / or after their presidency and also traveled on horseback.

For President Trump, Michigan is a crucial state to win in 2020. He won the 16 state votes by a slim margin of 0.23%.
