TThe US military apologized for threatening to deploy a stealth bomber over millennia that planned to "storm" the Zone 51 testing base in the Nevada desert.
Over the weekend, about 150 people descended on the very secret base, about a two-hour drive from Las Vegas, which has long attracted UFO enthusiasts convinced that it was hosting aliens.
Thousands of people were expected after a student created a Facebook page in June entitled "Storm Zone 51, they can not stop us all."
The page has become a viral sensation with more than three million people having expressed their interest in presenting themselves to "see the extraterrestrials".
On Friday, fearing a massive invasion, the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS), the US Army's public relations arm, issued a photo of military personnel standing next to the US Army. 39: A B-2 stealth bomber alongside the caption: "The last thing #Millennials will see is that they are trying the # area51raid today."
In reality, the dreaded stream of foreigners-observers was in fact a trick of eccentrics with eclectic costumes that irritated rather than threatened national security.
