Iran assured FIFA that it would allow women to attend a World Cup qualifier in Tehran next month, according to World Football Federation President Gianni Infantino.

This decision comes after Infantino asked the country to lift the ban on women attending football games early in the week.

The FIFA chief said in a statement that his position was "clear and firm" and that women "should be allowed" in the country's football stadiums.

The call was launched following the death of a football fan who burned himself after the fire after being denied entry into a stadium.

The ban has been in effect since 1979.

"We were assured that as of the next international match in Iran, women will be allowed to enter the football stadiums," said Infantino at a FIFA conference on women's football on Sunday.

"It's something very important, it's been 40 years since it did not happen, with a few exceptions, but it's important to go to the next level and the next step." , he added.

Before the match against Cambodia in October, FIFA officials traveled to Iran to discuss preparations for the clash.

The body said Saturday that the visit had shown "no significant operational obstacles" in the quest for lifting the ban.

FIFA has also announced its intention to work with the Iranian football authorities to allow women to also attend the league matches.
