The Times Square hotel evacuated Sunday under the smoke of the nearby restaurant spreads in air-wells

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – There was trouble in Times Square Sunday morning.

Marc Liverman, of CBS2, said that a popular hotel had been evacuated after the fire of a nearby building.

"The alarm went off and they said," Urgency! Emergency! Everyone needs to get out of the building, "said Lisa Geraerts, a guest of the hotel.

Guests at the Hyatt Times Square hotel remembered the terrifying moments when they woke up smoking rooms in the building. Outside, we could see it from blocks away.

"We could not really see anything because the smoke was rising, dark gray, so that's why we knew we had to go out," said guest Bryan Buswell.

So Buswell, a tourist from Britain, said that he had rushed up the stairs, meeting a friend a few flights away.

"I'm disabled and I can not walk properly. I was on the 43rd floor and he insisted that I go almost to the end. Forty-three stories down it, "said guest Diana Ross.

Ross, a native of London, said that the more they went down, the more customers began to fill the stairwell.

"Around the 23rd floor, it became scary and I was worried because there were a lot of people with disabilities struggling. Some carried crutches, "Ross said.

Ross, Buswell and all the others managed. Firefighters stated that some clients had minor injuries.

The problem started next to the hotel, in the O'Lunney pub, on 45th Street, near Seventh Avenue. Most of the damage is located inside the restaurant, where firefighters said that the fire had started. The smoke has spread through the ventilation system to the top of this building, reported Liverman.

The smoke is also infiltrated into the hotel 's air vents. A few hours later, the fire was completely extinguished, the smoke cleared and the guests returned to the interior.

"He is a hero and I want to thank him," said Ross of Buswell.

It was a trip to New York that they will never forget.

Firefighters said the exact cause of the fire was still under investigation.
