September 23 (UPI) – The famous TV chief, Carl Ruiz, is dead, according to his restaurant La Cubana in Manhattan. He was 44 years old.

"On behalf of the La Cubana family, with a heavy heart, we are deeply saddened to share the passing of our famous executive chef, Carl Ruiz," La Cubana said on Instagram. "No word can fully express our sadness at the sudden loss of our dear friend and brother."

The restaurant did not mention a cause of death.

During his 25 years in the restaurant industry, Ruiz has opened restaurants around the world and gained celebrity status after frequent appearances on The Food Network as a competitive chef and celebrity judge, according to his biography published on La Cubana.

The restaurant said that he had a larger-than-life personality, a "fierce intellect" and that he was "a powerful force of local Cuban cuisine and lived fully, just as he cooked."

The restaurant said that to honor his memory, he would create the Carl Ruiz Scholarship Foundation for budding chefs.

"You've missed us already," said the restaurant. "Stay calm."

While the news of Ruiz's death spread through the restaurants, his friends lamented on social media.

The restaurateur Guy Fieri said that he was "sorry that my friend chef Carl Ruiz was gone."

"I do not have words to describe what a great friend he was to me and my family," Fieri said. via Twitter. "His ability to make me laugh and smile in all circumstances has only been overshadowed by his leadership talent."

The famous chef Jet Tila has published photos of himself with Ruiz on Twitter, claiming that the Cuban-American leader had taught him to "make the most of every moment and not wonder if, on the contrary!"

"I will always be in a rush," he says, thanking Fieri for introducing him to Ruiz.

Alex Guarnaschelli, chef, author and host of The Food Network Stakeout Supermarket, described Ruiz as paternal, comforting, reckless and wise.

"My life will be more alone without him" she said. "I love Carl, I will make sure no one puts pineapple on a pizza my best without you here."
