PS5 will have less power than PS4, says Sony

The PlayStation 5 will be much more environmentally friendly than the PS4, according to Jim Ryan, Sony. In a recent article on the PlayStation Blog, detailing the way the company is tackling climate change, Ryan briefly talks about the next-generation machine, stating that at least one feature will be much more effective than the current console .

"I am also very pleased to announce that the next generation of PlayStation consoles will include the ability to suspend the game with much lower power consumption than the PS4 (which we estimate can reach about 0, 5 W), "said Ryan. "If only one million users activate this feature, this would represent a saving equivalent to the average power consumption of 1,000 US homes."

For comparison, a PS4 in idle mode uses about 10 W, or watts. If Sony could actually reduce the power consumption of the PS5 to only 5% of that of the PS4 once suspended, this would represent a significant reduction in energy waste. I hope it will also mean that the PS5 will consume less energy in general, but we will have to wait to see it. It's still a good sign and it's good to know that the new generation console will include the ability to suspend the game.
