Vice President Mike Pence marked his first for a speech on the scenic island of Mackinac, Michigan, sparking criticism on social media.
Pence led a procession of eight vehicles to the island's Grand Hotel for a speech at the Republican Leadership Conference on Saturday. He flew to Michigan, took a helicopter to the small island's airport and was transferred to vehicles brought by boat the previous night.
The Detroit Free Press said it was the first motorized motorcade on the island, which banned vehicles since 1898, with the exception of snowmobiles, emergency vehicles and service .
Julia Pulver, Democratic candidate for the Senate in 2018, criticized the procession on Twitter, calling it a "great transgression".
When President Gerald Ford visited the island in 1975, he went by horse-drawn carriage. But Pence supporters have noted that security is much stricter now.
