It's a beautiful moment – but some devoted fans of Downton wondered if it had been written to advance the plot or to satisfy a personal request from actress Maggie Smith. Famous, Smith was the last cast member to sign for the film and had already suggested that the film begin with the funeral of the Dowager's actress in an interview with the British Film Institute.
Now, Downton Abbey Producer Gareth Neame revealed that it was him, not Smith, who had decided to make the countess ill. "It was my decision because I thought we needed some time to convince Maggie to do the film and I wanted to show that we would not ask her again," he said. Weekly entertainment.

The producer also said she had never planned to kill the Dowager Countess during the film, nor to start the film with her funeral. It seems however likely that she will not succeed well in a sequel, if any.
